beauty routine: legit sun protection

My junior year of high school I went to my track meet without any sunscreen on. In Denver. While there was snow on the ground. From sunrise until late afternoon. My body was protected from the sun by my track sweats but my face was not. By the next morning my eyes were swollen shut and I had blisters all over my face. It was awful. And painful. I stayed home from school until the swelling went down but the damage to my face was pretty bad for weeks afterward – which is typical for severe 2nd degree burns.

Luckily I learned from that mistake and I developed what I like to refer to as The Super Legit White Girl Sun Protection Routine; which I will now generously bestow on to you.

The Super Legit White Girl Sun Protection Routine daily routine:

  • Find a daily moisturizer or foundation that has zinc oxide as the spf { I use 100% Pure‘s Argan Oil Facial Moisturizer Spf 30Fruit Pigmented Tinted Moisturizer. I love this company’s products but be forewarned that their customer service is awful and they are quite often out of stock for many products }
  • Regardless of the weather, use that zinc oxide moisturizer EVERY SINGLE MORNING!
  • Make sure you apply the spf to your neck, ears, and decolletage { these are often neglected areas that receive just as much sun exposure as the face does }
  • Invest in a good pair of sunnies. The sun can damage your eyes just as much as your skin and those cheap ones on the boardwalk simply don’t cut it. { I dig my TOMS aviators }
  • Use a lip balm with spf { my bff gave me the eos Smooth Sphere Lip Balm Lemon Drop with SPF 15 and I bring it everywhere }
  • Make sure to fully cleanse your face every night before going to bed so the zinc oxide – and other sun protection ingredients – get washed off { my new fav cleanser is ACTIVATED CHARCOAL CLEANSER from SHAMANUTI which I sampled from my Birchbox Free For All box! }
  • Only exfoliate at night so your skin doesn’t see the sun sans a few layers.

The Super Legit White Girl Sun Protection Routine beach day routine:

  • As soon as you’ve dried off from your shower, lather on a layer of lotion sunscreen – with zinc oxide! By putting the sunscreen on before putting on your bathing suit, you elinimate the possibility that you’ve missed a spot or that you haven’t covered areas that will be exposed when you’re moving around.
  • Once you’ve donned your bikini and made it down to the sand, spray your entire body with a spray sunscreen and let it dry before you lay out on your towel or jump in the water. { I recently sampled Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C SPF 30 & 50 from Supergoop }
  • Repeat the step above based on the time coverage limit listed on the sunscreen label (or at the top of every hour to be safe).
  • Wear a hat – my current fav is from Anthro – or wrap your hair with a scarf to protect your scalp and bring along a light cotton dress with long sleeves to give your bod a break from the sun.
  • Remember, once you get home, wash off all of that sunscreen and moisturize your skin. After a solid beach day you should have at least 5 or 6 layers of spf sitting on top of your skin. Which is pretty gross.

If you do happen to get sun burned, here is The Super Legit White Girl Sun Protection Routine sun burn cure:

  • Draw a luke warm bath (after washing all of the spf off of you) and add a 1/4 cup of epsom salts with 8 oz of apple cider vinegar. Grab a bottle of water to rehydrate yourself while you’re in there and soak for at least 20 minutes.
  • Then, never be irresponsible in the sun again. Seriously.
